Artist Presentation: ICE-ROD

“Humor is not my main medium, but definitely a consistent theme in my life and my artwork.”

History and Fun Facts

+Real Name is Michael Gaughan.

+Minneapolis-based artist, illustrator, and performer.

+BFA in Painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

+MEd from the University of Minnesota.

+He was a 3rd grade art teacher.

+He does not drink or smoke.

+Started over ten citywide scavenger hunts as performance art/public art in the US.

+His paintings have recently been used in a neurological medical study.

+He has made illustrations for Nike and American Apparel.

Non-Video Work

ICE-ROD is a well-rounded artist. He has created things other than performances. He creates arts of multiple mediums including; paintings, drawings, sculptures, and commercial work.

Video Work

ICE-ROD is the performer while Michael is the artist. ICE-ROD has a plethora of video projects. Here is the focus of three kinds of projects including Dorm Room Rap, Collage Videos, and more videos involving viewer participation (includes a collaboration with his sister).

Examples of Videos

Chatroulette Dorm Room Freestyle: ICE-ROD performs at music venues; sets up the stage to look like a dorm room (Bob Marley and Pulp Fiction Posters) and freestyle raps. This is all projected onto a screen for the audience to watch.

Animations: He uses found sounds and images and merges it to create a collage type of video to show the relationship between ideas.

Little Dog on Top of a Big Dog: ICE-ROD sets the stage with a white sheet and a projector/ drawing of YOUTUBE. He is the "live" video. And ask people to come and add comments.

Brother and Sister: Katie and Michael Gaughan (Brother and Sister) play positive, high-energy punk rock with a focus on visual performance and audience participation.
